Picturing Utopia

This two-part workshop will use Eamon O’Kane’s drawings and paintings as a starting point to realize our own landscape visions. The two meetings are intended as sequential, moving from collage into mixed media drawing.

Session 1: Collage
After a discussion of relevant artworks in the RAC galleries, each participant will use magazine and photocopied imagery to create an imagined-world collage that contrasts, joins, or questions the relationship between architecture and landscape. Students will be encouraged to work in a sketch-like manner and to embrace shifts in scale, shape, and style.

Materials: Bring magazine(s) with images of architecture or the natural world for you and to share with fellow participants.

Session 2: Composite Drawing

Participants will translate their collage imagery from Session 1 through tracing and/or freehand drawing onto a translucent drawing surface using pen and mixed drawing media. Through discussion with the instructor and fellow attendees, participants will focus on specific elements from their collage and continue to engage with contrasts of content and form.

Materials: Ink pen (Sakura Micron or similar is suggested, but not required). One sheet of synthetic vellum (Dura-lar) will be provided.

No collage or drawing experience is necessary. Students interested in attending only Session 2, however, should contact RAC in advance.

Session 1: Thurs, February 1, 6-8pm
Session 2: Thurs, February 8, 6-8pm
$10 per session, $18 for both
Payment accepted in person at Rochester Art Center or by phone: 507-282-8629.
