3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series
January 26 – April 7, 2013
Atrium Gallery

Opening Reception
Januray 26 | 7 pm
Artist talk and performance at 8:30 pm

Jessica Ashley Nelson admires dance in the context of visual art making, as it presents a confusion between material and immaterial experiences. Within her work, she explores this concept through deconstruction and isolation of existing dance structures. She is drawn to simple gestures and their ability to reengage as well as alter perception. Nelson will choreograph a series of interpretive dance performances within the Rochester Art Center's Third Floor Atrium Gallery. Utilizing mediums such as film, photography, text, and sound as vehicles of translation, she re-contextualizes existing dance choreography. Presenting scenarios in which prescribed frameworks are altered by removing, reversing, or re-presenting chosen elements of traditional dance performance, she destabilizes conventional modes of perception and interpretation. Through these subtle shifts, she reveals the disconnects between performance, performer, and audience as well as the unseen elements that which both contribute to and counteract dance. By denying access to dance's assumed language and environment, audiences are provided the opportunity to question learned structures of communication and behavior and consider what is lost in the process of translation.

3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series

Rochester Art Center continually strives to engage community members of all ages in the creation, contemplation, and appreciation of the visual arts. As a non-collecting institution, the Art Center focuses it efforts on presenting temporary exhibitions throughout the year featuring established local, national and international artists, as well as emerging artists from diverse backgrounds working in a variety of media.

In 2004, Rochester Art Center initiated the 3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series?\an exhibition program dedicated to promising young artists working in the state of Minnesota. Since its inception, the series has reflected shifting trends in contemporary artistic practice and production, and has helped to facilitate the creation of new bodies of work in a variety of media including photography, installation, sound, painting, drawing, sculpture and film. Now in our eighth year, the 3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series continues to support emerging artists and to provide a dedicated forum for the exhibition of exciting new work.

The 3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series is made possible through funding by the Jerome Foundation.
