Seniors, Medicine and Art (SMArt)

Tuesday, September 11 | 9:00 – 11:00AM | FREE | Genetically Modified Organisms: Advantages and Concerns

Some concern exists in society relative to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). A power point presentation will be used to discuss GMOs having different objectives such as their use in crops, production of non-food substances; medical applications; and the placement of foreign genes directly into organisms making up our foodstuffs. A brief explanation will show how scientific methods are used to accomplish GMOs. Also, societal implications will be an important part of the presentation.

Tuesday, August 14 | 9:00 – 11:00AM | FREE | Fountain of Youth. Possible or Not

This presentation will delve into the aging process of humans. Although scientists have provided several hypotheses for the cause of aging, an important revelation has evolved indicating that humans are genetically programmed to age and dye. Life span has finite limits, which have not changed in recent historical history. In addition, scientific data show that body cells also age and have a finite life span just as organisms do. A series of questions will be explored based upon these phenomena: (1) Is there a relationship between the aging of cells and the aging of humans? (2) Can science find ways to extend the human life span? (3) If the life span is eventually increased, what are the societal ramifications?
