Community Mural Painting

April 20 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

You’re invited! : Community Mural Painting

To Register:

Thank you for attending our recent Community Mural Workshops at the Rochester Art Center and John Marshall High School. Professional artist and designer June Le has combined your input into a beautiful mural design, and now it’s your turn to help paint! We’ll have two opportunities to swing by and help June, plus professional artist Allegra Lockstadt, bring your ideas to life! Wear comfortable paint clothes and drop in for as long as you’d like.

Didn’t participate in the earlier workshops, but still want to come help paint? No problem! Simply sign up. All are welcome.

Community Mural Paint Time:

Wed. April 20th 1:00 – 4:00 PM and Friday April 22nd 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Rochester Art Center, 30 Civic Center Drive SE

How did the Art Center decide what to include in the mural?

Artists Roshan Ganu and June Le led a series of workshops, generating ideas for a public mural to be painted in the Entry Corridor Gallery of the Rochester Art Center.

More information about the workshops…

During these workshops Indian artist Roshan Ganu helped spark participants’ inner creativity in discussing “home”. (Prompts included: What and where is home? Is home a place, a smell, a memory, an object, a person?) Participants were given the opportunity to sketch, paint, or write. Using community input such as words, sketches, symbols and more, Vietnamese artist June Le shaped these ideas and concepts into the final design. Participants are invited (but not required) to return to the Art Center to assist Le in painting the mural in late April, 2022.

As Rochester grows into a more diverse and international city, the Rochester Art Center strives to highlight and celebrate a plurality of voices through the stories of transplants, immigrants and long-time residents who decided to make Minnesota their home. The creation of a participatory mural in the Entry Corridor Gallery, located on the first floor at the Art Center, showcases this commitment and invites visitors to “meet” the people of Rochester as they enter the building.

Input was gathered from elementary aged students, high school students and adult community members in Rochester.

This project was curated by Italian artist and Minnesota transplant, Zoe Cinel.

This project is made possible by the generous support of the Think Bank.
