What and where is home? Is home a place, a smell, a memory, an object, a person? As the Rochester grows every day to be a more racially diverse and international city, the Rochester Art Center strives to highlight and celebrate a plurality of voices through the stories of transplants, immigrants and long-time residents who decided to make MN their home. The creation of a participatory mural in the Entry Corridor Gallery, located on the first floor at the Art Center, showcases this commitment and invites visitors to “meet” the people of Rochester as they enter the building.
The mural is designed and painted by Vietnamese artist June Le using community input such as words, sketches, symbols and more. During winter and spring 2022 visual artist Roshan Ganu and artist June Le will facilitate three workshops with elementary, high school students and community members in Rochester to gather inputs and include a plurality of voices into this unique artwork.
The project is curated by Art Center’s Curator Zoe Cinel

Roshan Ganu is a multimedia narrative artist originally from Goa-India, now based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mining objects and moments from her cultural memory juxtaposed with elements from her present reality, she creates a hybrid space where reality and fiction coexist. Using materials as language, she uses neon, water, light, colour and ink, abstracting the fluid state of mind inhabited by a migratory person. Projection and animation are used as tools to evoke ephemerality, wonder and a vivid imagination, all encompassing into an immersive space.
