Jehra Patrick: Inescapable Support

3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series

Atrium Gallery

About the artist

Jehra Patrick is a visual artist who looks to art institutional structures as being responsible for art’s development. Her purview closes in on the conditions of painting - as a discipline, an object and history – and its continued relevance and production. Experiencing the museum as an artist, she views exhibition, collection, interpretation and preservation as activities that determine art’s trajectory. Acknowledging this framework, and the artist’s reciprocal relationship with the museum, she sees the museum an aesthetic and political site.

Patrick mines museum spaces and archives for visual resources that document museum operations and histories, selecting compositions from her visual and museological research that are exhibitive of her working knowledge of art history. She then produces paintings that incorporate diachronic allusions to movements and artists, as well as depict the illusionary spaces and flat, screen-evenness of her source images. This body of work forms an expanding personal index that intervenes on institutional narratives, replying with new museal objects.

3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series

Rochester Art Center continually strives to engage community members of all ages in the creation, contemplation, and appreciation of the visual arts. As a non-collecting institution, the Art Center focuses it efforts on presenting temporary exhibitions throughout the year featuring established local, national and international artists, as well as emerging artists from diverse backgrounds working in a variety of media.

In 2004, Rochester Art Center initiated the 3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series—an exhibition program dedicated to promising young artists working in the state of Minnesota. Since its inception, the series has reflected shifting trends in contemporary artistic practice and production, and has helped to facilitate the creation of new bodies of work in a variety of media including photography, installation, sound, painting, drawing, sculpture and film. Now in our seventh year, the 3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series continues to support emerging artists and to provide a dedicated forum for the exhibition of exciting new work.

The 3rd Floor Emerging Artist Series is made possible through funding by the Jerome Foundation.
